TRIAL. NEWMAN, JOHN HENRY (Defendant). Achilli v. Newman: A Full and Authentic Report of the Above Prosecution for Libel, Tried Before Lord Campbell and a Special Jury, In the Court of Queen's Bench, Westminster, June, 1852... London: W. Strange, 1852. First Edition.

Pamphlet. 8vo, 65pp. + [iii]. Includes one-page advertisement for The Confessional Unmasked. Disbound, a few leaves loose but present, a bit of light toning. A fascinating report of the only trial which Newman had to suffer. The charge of libel was brought against Newman by former Catholic priest Dr. Giacinto Achilli, who Newman accused of licentious and immoral behaviour. Newman was working off of information from reliable sources, and the some of the victims of Achilli's seductions were brought from Italy to testify. Nonetheless, the jury found Newman guilty of libel and sentenced him to pay a fine of 100 pounds. He also owed about 14,000 pounds for his defense, which was quickly raised by his friends through public subscription. The copy is from the library of Max Lowenthal (1888-1971), an important adviser to many senators and Harry S Truman. Quite rare.
